Saeed Bin Suroor believes his horse Cavalryman has the class to take out the Melbourne Cup. The trainer plans on running Willing Foe alongside his ideal horse, as he seeks to break his duck in the richest two-miler in the world.

Bin Suroor has been a mainstay of the Godolphin operation since 1995, during which he saddled three Melbourne Cup seconds – Central Park (1999), Give The Slip (2001), and Crime Scene (2009) – and believes Cavalryman has the right attributes to win the 2m Group 1 handicap.

The eight year old, who came third to Sea The Stars in the 2009 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, has developed into a classy stayer and is a best-priced 33-1 shot with Bet365 Bet365.

“We have three times been second in the Melbourne Cup and you need a class horse these days,” said Bin Suroor.

“In the old days you would think about a handicapper and their weight but now you need a Group 1 or 2 horse who will go and do the job for you there.

“For the Melbourne Cup you need a 2400-metre [1m4f] horse with class and a turn of foot for 1200 metres [6f] as they go fast, slow and then fast again in the Cup and that is different to here in the UK.

“Cavalryman has the class and has won on all types of ground and we know the track at Flemington suits him.”

Cavalryman is no stranger to the Flemington track, having finished 12th in the 2012 Melbourne Cup. His form for this year’s race reads 12114.

“He won in Dubai and was then second in the race he won on World Cup night the previous year,” added Bin Suroor, who was talking to Racing Victoria.

“We then brought him back to the UK and he won at Newmarket and then at Goodwood. He was beaten last time at York, but is sound and in good health since. We think that the Melbourne Cup will suit him.

“He will go with Willing Foe and we will search for a third runner too. We will see how the horses run the next few weeks before making a decision.”

Entries for the A$6.2 million Melbourne Cup will be announced on Tuesday. Get your bets in at Bet365 Bet365 before then for the best price.
